Our Story

My name is Mags Ralston and I make beautiful soy and beeswax candles in The Outer Hebrides.

When my husband retired from the Royal Navy and took up a position with H.M. Coastguard in Stornoway, we embraced the idyllic island life on the Isle of Lewis. The village of Point warmly welcomed our family and our children were the first youngsters to be part of the community for many years.

I am passionate about every stage of candle making from the scientific research involved to the artistic design elements. I love experimenting with new fragrances and forms. My daughter Kirsty and I now make wax melts, pillar candles, room spray, beeswax polish, dog balm, carpet freshener etc. We use eco-friendly soy wax with premium fragrance oils.

My son’s interest in the iconic medieval Norse chessmen that were discovered on the island in the 19th century inspired me to make our own moulds. Our chessmen candles are made from 100% beeswax with our commissioned cotton wicks. We are delighted and proud to say that they are sold in the National Museum of Scotland, The British Museum and on Amazon. This product sits alongside our contemporary range.

As our family business grows our product range develops. In addition to our retail line of candles we also supply custom labels and a design service for Charites, weddings and corporate clients.

We sell our products through our Facebook, Instagram and on our webpage www.isleoflewiscandleco.com

We also love attending the local craft markets in the Town Hall and local community events as these are really supportive creative environments.

Most importantly can we take this opportunity to say a special thank you to everyone that supports us locally and the creative experts that have helped and advised us on our journey.
